Spring Fling at Deer Harbor - April 24-27th

The Deer Harbor Marina will again host the local American Tug Owners’ and their fleet of tugs for "Spring Fling".  This year a record 34 boats and 75 folks will be in attendance to celebrate the start of the season.

The American Tug Owners Association is a very active group with three events planned for 2014:  The season kick off “Spring Fling” at Deer Harbor, the Summer Expedition to the Broughton Island Group near the north end of Vancouver Island,  and the large annual Rendezvous which will be held in Anacortes this year.

American Tugs are a locally made expedition yacht, built in La Conner, WA. Since 2000 Tomco Marine Group has built over 218 of the Lynn Senour designed hulls.  Northwest vendors make or supply the bulk of parts used in the vessels, as Tomco puts a  large emphasis on utilizing the highest quality materials.  The Tugs are easy to spot on the water with their bluff bows and colored hulls.

Deer Harbor has proven to be very popular amongst the owners with comfortable docks and an accommodating staff.  The fleet is happy to see the marina repairs coming along smoothly and wish everyone at the facility a fast recovery. This will be the first large event on the docks since the recent fire.  This year the Deer Harbor Inn has invited the group for a Saturday night dinner. Other events include a golf tournament, Chicago style hot dogs on the new party dock, and a marine swap meet. Orcas locals Susan and Rex Chadwell, owners of the American Tug 41 "Flexible", have arranged the event for the past five years.

Dredging Funded for the South End of Swinomish Channel

La Conner – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers work plan for fiscal year 2014 includes $920,000 to dredge the south end of the Swinomish Channel, federal officials announced this week.

Corps officials are working on environmental documentation for the project and hope to start work in fall 2014, said John Hicks, chief of the Navigation Section at the Seattle District, Army Corps of Engineers.  “We are now in high gear to get this done,” Hicks added.

A survey of sedimentation in the Swinomish Channel, completed in December 2013, found that shoaling has occurred in several spots at the south end of the channel since the last round of dredging was completed the previous January. The channel remains in good condition north of Hole-in-the-Wall, the survey found.

The channel, first dredged more than a century ago, extends through former sloughs and portions of the Skagit and Samish River delta deposits. Due to heavy sedimentation, the channel must be dredged at least every three years to maintain navigable depths for commercial and recreational vessels. It is authorized to a depth of minus 12 feet MLLW.

The Port of Skagit, which owns and operates the La Conner Marina, is an active participant in the ongoing effort to ensure the channel remains a navigable waterway. Other partners include the Town of La Conner, the Port of Anacortes, Skagit County, the Shelter Bay Community, Dunlap Towing, and the Swinomish and Upper Skagit tribes.

“I want to thank you for the effective efforts by all of you, but especially the Upper Skagit Nation, in helping to get funding for the dredging of the Federal Channel at La Conner,” Hicks said in an email message to the partners. “This funding could not have been accomplished without all of your hard and persistent work.”

Patsy Martin, executive director of the Port of Skagit, also acknowledged the efforts of the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe. “Great thanks to the Upper Skagit tribe for their diligent efforts to explain the importance of the channel to both tribes’ fishing interests, along with the needs of commercial and pleasure boaters for a safe passage through this area,” she said.

Great Upgrade: DMK Electronics

Thinking of upgrading your electronics on your earlier American Tug 34?  DMK Yacht Instruments has a couple of enhancements to consider:  The WiFi Bridge and the Analog Engine Gateway.

The DMK 11A WiFi Bridge will wire to Raymarine Seatalk instruments as well as other protocols and send the data to an iPad, Windows tablet or PC.  The data can then be displayed on software like Coastal Explorer, or iNavX.

The Bridge has inputs for Raymarine Seatalk, NMEA 0183 (2 ports), and NMEA 2000.  It can wire to any or all of these input ports and will send the data out in a WiFi stream to multiple devices.  It can be a great way to add an AIS display or backup chartplotter.

The DMK AEM14 is an Analog Engine to NMEA 2000 gateway.  In short, the box will wire to your pre-electronic Cummins engine and send out its data to a NMEA 2000 network.  The AEM14’s engine data can be seen on any wired NMEA 2000 devices or on wireless devices when paired with the DMK 11A.

Currently one of our northwest American Tug 41's is adding the Engine Gateway allowing full engine data to be displayed on an IPad.  Several of our local boats have been enjoying the WiFi Bridge.
